The reason most people can’t recognize propaganda is because…it works
Most people believe they are immune to propaganda. That they are smart and know who and what to trust. That they know a lie when they see it and can call it out for what it it.
However, most people have no clue why they believe what they believe. They are swimming in so much propaganda and lies, they have as much of a chance as recognizing it as a fish can see water.
This is because propaganda works. The media reinforces the indoctrination we receive in school. School trained us to think in logical fallacies, to accept authority above all else, and to go along to get along for fear of reprisal.
The sad truth is, the vast majority of people have no idea who they are and how they arrived at their believe system. And the powers that be know this and use this every second of our lives to get us to do what they want.
Edward Bernays, father of public relations, wrote in his book “Propaganda”:
“The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. …We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society. …In almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons…who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind.”
If the last year hasn’t shown you this to be true…what will?
